August 24 is the Day of the Constitution of Georgia. At 5:50 p.m. on August 24, 1995 the Parliament adopted the Constitution of Georgia by 159 votes to 8.
"We, the citizens of Georgia, whose unwavering will is to establish democratic public institutions, economic freedom, a social and legal state, to secure universally recognized human rights and freedoms, to strengthen state independence and peaceful relations with other nations in accordance with the centuries-old traditions of statehood of the Georgian people and the Georgian Constitution of 1921. Based on historical-legal heritage we proclaim this Constitution before God and the country".
It is known that the State Constitutional Commission initially worked on a new version of the 1921 Constitution, but in the end it was decided to adopt the new Constitution.
On September 17, 1995 members of the State Constitutional Commission and the Parliament of Georgia signed the official text of the Constitution at the Government Palace, where the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia declared the act of restoration of Georgian independence.
