"We're Gonna Continue to Fight for His Release," - Congressman Mullin on Giorgi Rurua

Democracy does not work like that. In states of democracy and freedom, people are able to openly express their criticism towards the authorities, - said US Republican Congressman Markwayne Mullin in an exclusive interview on Mtavari Channel.

During an conversation with journalist Natia Gogsadze, the Congressman discussed the March 8 agreement, as well as the urgent need to release political prisoner Giorgi Rurua.

According to Mullin, Rurua is a bold person who was doing what the media are supposed to do. Moreover, he was imprisoned for openly expressing criticism towards the government of Georgia, which is totally unacceptable in democratic states.

We're gonna continue to fight for his release. We feel like that's the right thing to do, - added the Congressman.

The Republican report on National Security Strategy claims that Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party of Georgia, is affiliated with Vladimir Putin. Mullin is one of the 13 Congressmen who shares this statement. He thinks that Russia, indeed, strongly interferes with the affairs of Georgia in order to hinder democratic processes. Moreover, such massive interference can only be successful with the help from Georgian authorities.

There’s bad actors inside the government, and maybe individuals that are influencing government inside of Georgia, that’s working with Putin and Russia as a whole. If we can prove that facts that that's happening, which, like I said, my believe is we can, then we can use strong sanctions and powers that we have to build to push that out, and the country of Georgia to be able to form a separation and expose who they truly are, - he explained.

Congressman Mullin is fairly sure that the number of authorities who sign the letter to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili will increase. In his words, the US aims to support true democracies.

It’s just Georgia is a long way from the United States and we’re not trying to as a country, trying to meddle in everybody’s business. It’s not what we want to do, - asserted Mullin.
