The "Georgian Dream" will not nominate a public defender - Mdinaradze

"Georgian Dream" will not present the candidacy of the people's advocate and will register amendments to the parliamentary regulations, according to which the general criteria of candidate's evaluation will be spelled out. This was announced by the leader of the parliamentary majority Mamuka Mdinaradze:

Today we have decided to register amendments in the Parliament's Rules of Procedure, according to which the general criteria of candidate's evaluation, impartiality, high reputation, relevant professional knowledge and practical experience in the sphere of human rights and fundamental freedoms will be prescribed, and on the other hand, the basis for the Parliament will be created. so that the chairman of the Parliament can issue an Extraordinary Ordinance, which defines the procedure for evaluating candidates.

1. Any person may submit an application to be nominated as a People's Advocate.

2. A panel consisting of representatives from civil society, including professional and academic circles, will evaluate each candidate according to the criteria outlined in the regulation. Then, candidates will be presented with their scores to parliamentary bodies which, in their turn, must present at least seven candidates for the position of Public Defender to be elected to the Parliament of Georgia, no maximum number will be set. ," Mdinaradze said.

As for the decision of the majority not to nominate a candidate, Mdinaradze says he will entrust the issue to opposition structures and civil sector, but if the majority thinks that the process is sabotaged by the opposition, the decision will be changed:

"The parliamentary majority will not nominate the people's advocate and we will entrust it to the opposition entities and the civil sector. Except for the one case when there may be an artificial blockage, sabotage by the opposition entities through deliberate non-promotion of the candidates. - Mdinaradze said.
