According to Khatia Dekanoidze, a member of the National Movement, the planned changes regarding the procedure for electing the public defender are unacceptable, because the ruling party does not want an independent public defender.
According to her, the procedure for electing the ombudsman should remain the same and candidates should be presented by non-governmental organizations.
The initiative of "Georgian Dream" to change the legislative framework and to add one artificial link to the election of the Public Defender, which means that it turns out that selected academic circles and non-governmental organizations chosen by the "Georgian Dream" should select and evaluate candidates, is an unacceptable, destruction and sabotage of the 12-point plan. "Georgian Dream" wants the public defender not to be independent and to be selected by them. I am sure that a large part of the opposition, including our party, is committed to the 12-point plan and our position is the same as supporting the one selected by non-governmental organizations to the candidates. The procedure for electing the public defender should remain the same, candidates should be presented by non-governmental organizations. We will involve the parliamentary opposition in this process. No legislative changes or the creation of an additional link are necessary," says Dekanoidze.
