"Due to the fact that the implementation of the 12 points set by the European Union is a special priority for us, as an exception, we will turn a blind eye to the legal principles and accept the new procedure of the Prosecutor General election without any preconditions" - Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze says this at a special briefing.
Against the background of sabotage, the Georgian Dream is actively working to fulfill the 12 points set by the European Union. Part of the 12 points is to review the procedure of electing the Prosecutor General of Georgia. To fulfill this clause, yesterday the parliamentary majority officially initiated a draft constitutional law, the exact content of which was agreed last year through consultations between the opposition and the majority.
According to the bill, the Parliament of the next 2 convocations will elect the Prosecutor General of Georgia by a 3/5 majority vote for a 6-year term, and if the candidate does not get 3/5 votes, the General will be elected by a majority vote, but for a 1-year term. This bill, which was agreed with the parliamentary opposition, has no analogue in any country of the world, and there is a simple reason for that. Its content contradicts the logic of the system of government and elementary legal principles, on which we will not dwell today.
We will only remind that for the abovementioned reason, by our decision last year the adoption of the corresponding constitutional decision was stopped. But since the implementation of the 12 points set by the European Union is a special priority for us, as an exception, we will turn a blind eye to the legal principles and adopt a new rule for the election of the Prosecutor General without any prerequisites," Kobakhidze said.
