The war, which lasted 13 months and 13 days, began on August 14, 1992 and ended on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sukhumi.

According to various data, the war killed 10,000 to 30,000 soldiers and civilians. About 300 thousand people became refugees in their own country.

The armed conflict began after the State Council of Georgia sent additional troops to protect the Sochi-Ingiri section of the railway in agreement with Vladislav Ardzinba, the chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia.

Despite the agreement, the separatists opened fire on the army unit in Ochamchire and Gulrifsh.

International organizations have recognized the fact of ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia. Despite many years of negotiations and resolutions adopted by the United Nations, the conflict is still unresolved.

After seizing the city, the separatists shot the members of the local government: Giuli Shartava, Guram Gabiskiria and Raul Eshba, who refused to escape, in front of the government house, and Alexander Berulava disappeared without a trace.
